The 18-year-old Bremerton woman involved in a car crash on Clear Creek Road on Friday morning died over the weekend at Harborview Medical Center, according to family members.

Neveah Hawkins and her boyfriend, who was sitting in the passenger seat, were airlifted to Harborview Friday after the car she was driving was struck by an oncoming vehicle. Hawkins had attempted to make a left turn onto southbound Clear Creek Road from Closser Drive when a truck traveling northbound struck her vehicle on the driver’s side.

Hawkins died early Saturday morning from injuries sustained in the crash, according to a hospital spokeswoman. Hawkins’ boyfriend was in satisfactory condition Monday morning.

Hawkins, who turned 18 on Oct. 31, was at different points a student at Olympic High School and Bremerton High School. A driven and motivated student, Hawkins graduated from high school a year-and-a-half early, according to her mother Jennifer Boice.

As soon as she turned 18, Hawkins had hoped to join a local union and start her career as a diesel mechanic and heavy machinery operator. She loved working on cars and had already filled out all the necessary union paperwork in anticipation of her birthday.

“She’s not one to waste time, she liked to get things done and move forward,” Boice said.

Boice raised Hawkins with her stepdad until she was 14, at which point she met her biological father, Uriah Hawkins, and her stepmom, Christine Jones. Hawkins had five total siblings and was often the “line leader” for the four youngest, her mother said.

“She had a presence when she entered a room; it was hard not to notice her,” Boice said.

“She was very very close with all her siblings,” Jones, Hawkins’ stepmom, said.

Outside of her jobs at Jiffy Lube and All Star Lanes bowling alley, Hawkins enjoyed spending time outdoors, either on camping trips with family or at the beach. She was a member of her high school wrestling team but also enjoyed volleyball, wakeboarding and riding motorbikes.

Hawkins made friends easily, but “you always knew where you stood with her, she didn’t hold much back,” Boice said.

“I don’t know that there are many people who encountered her who didn’t enjoy her.”

The intersection where Hawkins was hit was the site of another vehicle-related death in 2016, when Carolyn Marie Shaw, a 57-year-old Poulsbo woman, was killed in a head-on collision. Shaw had also been turning left from Closser onto southbound Clear Creek Road.

Both Jones and Boice said that there are mailboxes at the intersection that could affect sightlines depending on the size of the vehicle and the height of the driver. Investigators found that Hawkins failed to yield to traffic but determined that alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

“It’s a complete blind spot if you ask the residents on that street,” Boice said.

The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for funeral expenses, which has already received more than $9,500.
