PHI surges ahead of the pack in SEA Games windsurfing

The Philippines scored two gold and one silver medal in windsurfing

SUBIC – Host country Philippines made waves in windsurfing in the 2019 SEA Games, garnering two of the three gold medals at stake, Monday at the Yacht Club here.

It was smooth-sailing for two-time world champion Geylord Coveta en route to the gold medal as his 18 points after 12 rounds set the standard.

Malaysian silver medalist Illham Wahab had 30 points while Thai bronze medalist Navin Singsart had 36.

The golden win is a resurgence for Coveta after he had to settle for silver in the 2017 regional meet.

Yancy Kaibigan was just as impressive in claiming his gold medal, totalling 19 points at the end of Round 12.

The Filipino was two points better than silver medalist Natthappong Phonoppharat of Thailand with 21 points and 16 better than bronze medalist Ahmad Danish Abdul Hadi Kami of Malaysia with 35 points.

Thailand, though, topped the women’s race as Cholchava Junthonglang finished first with 25 points as 12 races came to a close.

Filipina Charizzanne Jewel Napa was five points behind at 30 for the silver while Indonesian Nenni Marlini had 35 to her name for the bronze.
