She and Davies are now looking forward to the next round featuring the Gold Coast Pro on November 1.

Davies opened the heat with a 6.5 before the scoring waves deserted him.

Just when it seemed his luck was out, he managed to snare a classic in the dying minutes of the heat to blow his rivals away with an 8.50 for a combined heat total of 15 out of 20.

‘That was really exciting, I wasn’t expecting that,” Davies said.

“It’s been a long break since we’ve had competitions so it feels awesome to get the rashie back on and get a win.

“I’m looking forward to the Gold Coast leg now – until then I’ll just be training.”

McCulloch seemed unfazed by carrying the pressure of the event top seeds number 12 ranked surfer in the WSL Qualifying Series.

Her explosive opening ride of 9.83 took the event by the scruff of the neck then she followed through with a 7.50 for a combined heat total of 17.33 to defeat Maroochydore’s Dimity Stoyle, Coolangatta’s Piper Harrison and Tayla Green of Buddina in the final.

“That turned out to be really fun,” McCulloch said.

“The paddle-out was pretty intense but lucky enough I was able to get the turns in that I wanted to.

“I knew the judges were rewarding bigger, more committed turns so I really laid into that first one and managed to get the excellent score to open the heat – I’m stoked.”
