The biggest draw of this mosaic-decorated hotel, the brainchild of a French artist, is the view of Amber Fort from its rooftop restaurant. It’ll take you a couple of meals at least, if not days, before you become accustomed to it, and actually focus on the food in front of you. Speaking of the food, the menu is a different one every day, and made with locally-sourced, fresh ingredients. The location is also quite advantageous, being within walking distance of the fort, the elephant temple , a step-well and a museum. If the mosaic work entrances you, ask about learning the craft at the hotel!

It’s fitting that in Thanjavur, the land of temples and legends, this property is a restored Colonial bungalow, located opposite the Tanjore Palace. You’re transported to a different world as soon as you step in through its doors, with mythology-inspired art peeking at you from every nook and cranny, and the décor being highly influenced by the art and culture of Thanjavur. Be sure to take your meals at the tastefully decorated roof top restaurant. The food is delicious and made with organic ingredients sourced locally. The hotel is also located in a great spot to explore all of Thanjavur’s illustrious history easily.

This homestay in the village of Parule in Sindhudurg, in the Konkan region is tucked away in the lap of nature. Named after traditional structures that were made by farmers to protect crops, the property has village themed cottages with modern amenities. The décor is rustic and the setting among plantations of coconut, banana, betel nut and spices, is brilliant. You can choose to explore nearby regions, with some temples, beaches and forts to get a sense of the place but you could also just while away time at the property. Each room comes with spacious sit-outs, and all you’ll hear through the day is bird song. The location amid plantations also ensures the temperatures remain cool without any need for artificial regulation. The food is strictly local – delicious, sustainably sourced and prepared through traditional methods. You’ll never want to leave, even if you spend a week here doing nothing.
