A 25-year-old man is dead after a surfing accident near Packery Channel on Wednesday.

At 3:19 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 14000 block of Gulf Beach Road for a potential drowning. Upon arrival, officers discovered the man was surfing and had injured himself, according to Senior Officer Gena Pena.

The man was in critical condition and was taken  to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, Pena said.

The man’s identity has yet to be released. 

Wednesday evening Mayor Joe McComb issued an emergency order restricting access to Gulf beaches due to dangerous conditions caused by Hurricane Laura.

The order will remain in effect until Thursday, Aug. 27 at 10 a.m., a release from the city said.
