Terri Irwin has shared a funny anecdote about the day she met her late husband Steve Irwin.
The American conservationist was visiting Down Under in 1991 when she encountered The Crocodile Hunter star at Australia Zoo. She knew there was an immediate attraction, but the only problem was, she thought he had a girlfriend.

“We weren’t real young when we met. These guys were really young,” Oregon native Terri told Us Weekly, referring to the couple’s daughter Bindi Irwin, 21, and her fiancé Chandler Powell, 22.
“But Steve was, like, 29 and I was 27, and the first thing you think is, ‘He’s probably in a relationship.’ But I didn’t know how to say, ‘Hi, we’ve just met. Are you in a relationship?’ I think he kind of sensed that, so he said, ‘Would you like to meet my girlfriend?'”
Turns out, Steve — who sadly passed away in 2006 after being fatally attacked by a stingray — was quite the jokester.
“I just felt utterly crushed,” Terri recalled. “And then he called out, ‘Hey, Suey,’ and here comes this little dog, Suey. I went, ‘Boom! No girlfriend!'”

In a case of history repeating, Bindi and Chandler met exactly the same way her parents did all those years ago. Chandler was in Australia for a wakeboarding competition back in 2013 when he dropped by Australia Zoo and fell head over heels for Bindi upon seeing her.
“It was so cool seeing the parallels,” Chandler told Us Weekly. “Because [Bindi and I met] right next to where Steve and Terri met [after] Steve had just finished a croc demonstration. I met Bindi right next door, and I was holding a koala and Bindi was holding an echidna, and it was just love at first sight.”
“It’s just extraordinary,” added Bindi, who became engaged to Chandler on July 24, on her 21st birthday. “We met in the same place at the Australia Zoo that Mum and Dad did. They have a photo of when they first met, and so do we, and we both have those silly little smiles.”
