NEW YORK CITY — Unemployment in New York City remained at record high levels last month as the coronavirus pandemic continued to stifle the city’s economy, new state data shows.

The city’s July unemployment rate stood at 20 percent, virtually identical to the level in June, according to state .

A year ago, the city’s jobless rate was 4.3 percent.

It’s no secret the coronavirus pandemic and ensuing lockdown measures have devastated New York City’s economy. But the monthly data shows how bleak the city’s jobs picture is compared even to the decidedly less-than-rosy levels across the state.

New York as a whole lost 1.34 million private sector and government jobs from July 2019 to this year, according to data. Of those, 715,000 were in New York City.

The city’s jobless rate, in fact, skews the state’s entire unemployment rate higher. The Buffalo area has the next highest rate at 14.1 percent, while unemployment in non-metro areas stood at 11.7 percent.

And the Bronx appears to be the hardest-hit county in the state. The unemployment rate there stood at 24.9 percent in July, data shows.

Here are the unemployment rates for the five boroughs in July:

  • Bronx — 24.9 percent
  • Brooklyn — 20.4 percent
  • Manhattan — 15.9 percent
  • Queens — 20.5 percent
  • Staten Island — 17.3 percent
