Surfing as therapy | News, Sports, Jobs – Maui News

Juliette Brown, 9, waves to her mom while catching a ride at Kihei’s Cove Park on Saturday morning with Josh Batis of Surf Clinics of Maui. Juliette is one of the kids with autism that Batis donates his time to take out on the water and catch waves. “Every day is donation day,” Batis said. “He’s awesome,” said Juliette’s mom, Marina Brown. “He also works with the traumatic brain injury kids. It’s great therapy. We’d be pretty much trapped at home without Josh. It lets us get out, get her into the water.” Batis said his goal is to make positive memories for all of his surf students. “The thing they are going to remember about COVID is the surfing, about all the fun they had surfing,” he said. Batis said his is a donation-based surf school; he can be reached on social media sites at Surf Clinics of Maui or by email at surfclinicsofmaui@gmail.com.
